Cutting carbon on our sites
We have reduced total emissions from our operations by 39% since 2013, by improving energy efficiency and switching to green energy. We now purchase 100% REGO backed renewable electricity for new sites during construction as well as our offices, show homes, sales areas and plots before sale, around 58% of our total electricity consumption.
We’re testing a range of technologies and solutions to help us further cut our footprint – from more efficient site portacabins to low carbon alternatives to diesel fuel.
Our network of Sustainability Champions and senior sponsors in each regional business help us to implement our commitments and improve performance. Our Environmental Innovation Grants give colleagues the opportunity to explore new ways of reducing our environmental impacts.
Tackling supply chain emissions
Around 59% of our total carbon footprint relates to our supply chain including the materials we use to build our homes.
We’re working with suppliers to select more sustainable and lower carbon materials such as glass mineral wool insulation made from recycled wine bottles and recycled uPVC in many of our window frames. We’re also increasing the proportion of homes built using timber frame, which can reduce embodied carbon compared with traditional brick and block building techniques.
Reducing carbon emissions for customers
We have an opportunity to help our customers to live a lower carbon lifestyle through the way we design our homes and developments.
Our homes are already very energy efficient [link to relevant page] and over the next few years we’ll be integrating more features and technologies to reduce energy use and carbon emissions even further. From 2025, we expect our homes to be net zero ready, in line with the UK’s new Future Home Standard.
We’ll also be installing 36,000 EV charging points on customer homes by the mid 2020s, helping more people make sustainable transport choices.
